TOTAL WATER MANAGEMENT FOR SUGAR FACTORY

Our organization is working in the field of Environmental Management as Technical Advisors for the past 34 years and the profile of our organization enclosed herewith bears testimony of our experience and expertise in the field.
While Advising Environmental Management Projects of Sugar and Allied Industries, it is our observance that an effective balance between Resource Conservation and treatment efficiencies can be grouped under a ‘Concept Working’ of ‘TOTAL WATER MANAGEMENT’.

This approach is best planned from ‘Whole to Part’ theme and therefore a comprehensive work out for all the industrial sub-units in the complex, both as individual and as a part of Total Industrial Complex is beneficial, as there is considerable linking in the process applications. The following work areas are therefore envisaged in our concept of ‘Total Water Management’.

Precise Water Budgeting for individual and comprehensive sub-process.
Effecting TECHNICALLY ZERO WATER INPUT by working out and adopting efficient treatment techniques for Condensate.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES CONSIDERED

WATER BUDGET
The first step in the exercise shall be careful analysis of water balances of various subprocesses, and defining the ‘Optimum Use Pattern’. Segregation of various water and effluent streams based on the quality parameter and usage and getting the networks changed shall be the next step. Once this is established, the quantification and quality estimation of water use, effluent generation and excess condensate streams becomes easy and the entire system design can be based on this.

EFFLUENT TREATMENT PLANT
1) In Plant Control
Considering the basic philosophy that ‘Waste is a misplaced resource’, a strategy is devised, wherein it is possible to segregate the various wastewater streams and in the first place, try to reuse them as it is for suitable application in processes. If a stream cannot be directly used, applying the ‘Selective treatment’ methodology to have optimum treatment of the same, of course at minimum energy and other resource spending. This shall result in effluent requiring treatment to a minimum volume and concentration.
2) Spraypond / Process Cooling Tower Overflow Water Treatment for Sulphate Reduction
Spray Pond water has normally, organic matter within limits for disposal, however, has high sulphate concentrations. Direct disposal of the same, as in practice for years, has shown its untoward effect on receiving water body or farm land where it is applied. State Pollution Control Boards have started imposing standards for this stream, insisting for treatment of the same.
A separate treatment is advocated wherein after removal of sulphates and calcium, this water can be subjected to other optimized effluent for combine treatment.
3) Effluent Treatment Plant for Sugar Factory
Design of Effluent Treatment Plant based on our experience of management over 50 sugar industrial complex.
